Choosing the Right Glasses for School

Getting the right glasses for school isn’t just about seeing the board clearly – it’s about comfort, style and making sure you’re ready for anything the school day throws at you.

Whether you’re a university student in need of an eyewear upgrade, or a parent trying to make the best choice for your kids, this guide takes all factors into consideration,  so you – and your kids – can be sure the glasses you choose will provide comfort and confidence in the classroom.

Plastic or metal frames?

When it comes to frames, there is no shortage of options out there. Plastic frames come in a wide range of colours, and are generally more affordable. They’re perfect for expressing your personality and adding a pop of fun to your school day.

The lightweight quality of plastic frames can also make them a smart choice for kids who may be reluctant to wear their specs. With a plastic pair, they might even forget they’ve got them on!

Metal frames, on the other hand, are durable, have a classic vibe and often feature adjustable nose pads for that just-right fit. Kids may find adjustable nose pads uncomfortable, so if they bother your little ones, it’s best to opt for plastic ones with a fixed bridge pad instead.

A comfortable fit

The last thing anyone needs during a big exam is the distraction of ill-fitting glasses. Make sure the bridge fits snugly on your nose without pinching, and that the arms rest comfortably over your ears.

Remember, a comfortable fit means you can focus on your studies, not on keeping your glasses in place! Children are generally more likely to break or damage their glasses than adults, and if they’re too loose, that likelihood will only increase.

Keep in mind that you can take your frames to a local optician and have them adjusted for a better fit. If your child is using a hand-me-down pair from a sibling, or has a sudden growth spurt, this can be a very useful option.

Lens materials and coatings

Lenses have come a long way, and now you can choose materials that are thinner, lighter and more impact-resistant—perfect for the hustle and bustle of school life.

Plastic lenses are the go-to nowadays as they’re lighter and more durable than their glass predecessors.

Coatings are the secret sauce: anti-reflective coatings reduce glare from screens and fluorescent lights, while UV protection shields your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.

Impact-resistant coatings help your lenses withstand the rough and tumble of your backpack. Given the aforementioned knack that kids have for testing the durability of their glasses, scratch resistance is something that comes in very handy!

Consider the temples

The temples of your glasses can make a big difference in how you look and feel. Look for temples that have a comfortable grip without squeezing the life out of your head.

Some even come with fun designs or logos, adding that extra flair to your school look. If you’ve got young kids, you could even go for a pair with specially designed temples that hook around the ears to prevent them from falling off.

An elasticated band that attaches to the temples and stretches around the back of the head is another alternative.

Look good, feel good

Your glasses are a part of your identity, so choose a pair that makes you feel confident. Whether it’s a bold shape that shows off your creativity or a subtle frame that speaks to your studious side, wearing glasses you love can give you a boost of confidence—just what you need to raise your hand and speak up in class.

Kids can be very self-conscious when it comes to wearing glasses, so be sure to let them pick a frame that they like; don’t force your own choice on them. Complimenting them on how cool they look in their new glasses will do no harm, either!

Buy a backup pair

Accidents happen, and glasses can break. That’s why it’s smart to have a backup pair. Maybe choose something with a different style or colour, so you can mix it up based on your mood or outfit. Plus, you’ll never have to worry about being without your specs when you need them most.

Choosing the right glasses for school is about balancing function and fashion. Take your time trying on different styles, and remember, the best pair of glasses is the one that makes you feel unstoppable! With our wide selection of kids’ glasses, you’re bound to find something to help them shine at school!
