Brand Spotlight: Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger is the king of classic American cool with a modern edge. This premium brand blends the star power of celebrity with its down-to-earth spirit that has continued to sell for 30 years since the brand’s launch.

So why is it that everyone loves this iconic brand? To find out, let’s take a look at Tommy Hilfiger’s unique journey to fame and fortune.

Who is Tommy Hilfiger?

Tommy Hilfiger was born in 1951 in Elmira, New York. Born to a large family, he already showed a penchant for fashion at an early age. In fact, Hilfiger started to customise and sell bell-bottom jeans from the trunk of his car while still in school.

“The Peple’s Place” was the first Tommy Hilfiger business and it did very well. However, when he was 25, the business went bankrupt which, while disappointing, prompted Hilfiger to study commerce and learn how to run a profitable business.

Tommy Hilfiger in New York

In 1979, he moved to New York City to pursue his career in fashion design and worked design assistant positions in large fashion houses.

However, he soon realised he wanted something new and decided to instead start his own American fashion business. His first design team was called “Tommy Hill”, after his own name.

A few years later, his work caught the attention of Mohan Murjani, an Indian textile magnate who wanted to launch a men’s clothing line.

The Tommy Hilfiger brand is born

The first Hilfiger collection focused on modernising button-down shirts and chinos. It successfully blended preppy style with a cool and relaxed West Coast attitude, a combination which had never been seen before.

In 1985, the business rocketed to popular attention with the help of an advertising campaign designed in collaboration with George Lois.

The “hangman” billboard cleverly positioned Tommy Hilfiger alongside Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein.

Two years later, the business had grown enough to leave the fold of Murjani International.

With the help of former Ralph Lauren executives, Lawrence Stroll and Joel Horowitz, the entire brand continued to grow and Tommy Hilfiger Inc. was founded as the face of the business.

In 1995, his contribution was formally acknowledged by the fashion world. Tommy Hilfiger was named Menswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

That same year, Hilfiger launched his first Beverly Hills store, catapulting him into the next league as an international designer.

A winning formula for the Tommy Hilfiger brand

The American designer pioneered a new form of marketing through successful collaborations with celebrities. Tommy Hilfiger sponsored hip-hop stars and funded the tours of world-famous pop icons.

He also collaborated on fashion and fragrance campaigns with models and rock stars and partnered with a tennis star who became a Hilfiger brand ambassador.

Today, Hilfiger’s collections include:

  • Tommy Hilfiger Tailored for Men
  • The Hilfiger Collection for Women
  • Hilfiger Denim
  • A women’s sportswear line
  • A men’s sportswear line
  • Children’s wear
  • Footwear
  • Accessories
  • Bedding
  • Fragrances

Tommy Hilfiger changes things up

In 2010, Hilfiger sold The Tommy Hilfiger Corporation to Phillips van Heusen. Now under the umbrella of PVH Corp and with global retail sales in 2023 of around $9 billion, it looks set to continue to thrive.

It also has strong sustainability and inclusivity programs, including the Adaptive clothing range for people with disabilities.

Tommy Hilfiger remains the company’s principal designer and still has his finger on the pulse of American fashion and pop culture.

Since he sold the business, Hilfiger has sponsored several seasons of “Americans in Paris.” This showcases aspiring designers in the fashion industry.

As part of the program, Hilfiger collaborated with designers Simon Spurr and George Esquivel, amongst others.

Hilfiger published his memoir, “American Dreamer” in 2015, as a retrospective of his last 30 years in the fashion industry.

Today, this fashion icon lives in Palm Beach, Florida, with his wife, Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger and their five children.

Hilfiger continues to make a difference through The Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation, which aims to empower America’s youth, as well as many other philanthropic programs.

Brand Spotlight: Smith

Orthodontist and skiing enthusiast Bob Smith established Smith Optics in 1965. Though small at first, this eyewear brand is a big hit around the world thanks to its superb quality, style and innovative technology.

The Smith range started with athletes’ wear for winter sports – breathable vent foam goggles with sealed thermal lenses.

This comes as no surprise given Smith’s passion for winter sports. Now, the Smith eyewear collection has expanded and they offer everything from sunglasses to prescription eyewear that’s both functional and stylish.

Dr. Robert E. Smith

Born in San Carlos, California in 1933, Robert Earl Smith always had ambition. For a few years, he attended Stanford, but then moved on to the San Francisco College of Dentistry to pursue a dental career.

Following his graduation, Smith joined the military and worked in dentistry in Germany where he was happy to spend his weekends skiing. He opened his own private practice in 1960 in California, but moved to Utah in 1964 after getting married.

Where it all started

Like many other brands that now have worldwide recognition, Smith Optics comes from humble beginnings.

Robert Smith’s first ski goggles were hand-built in his own garage and sold from his van when he went on weekend skiing trips to Colorado and Utah.

green ski goggles

Over the next few years, Smith worked on improving both the technology and design of his goggles. In 1967 he secured a distribution deal with the founder of the Obermeyer ski-wear company, Klaus Obermeyer.

In 1969, Smith began to produce and sell goggles under the Smith brand in Rifle, Colorado. Just a couple of years later, production moved to Ketchum in Idaho.

Never one to shy away from innovation, Smith went on to develop the Turbo Fan constant air management system and designed the first goggles with active ventilation capabilities!

He then went on to develop the Roll Off film system which kept Moto goggles free of dust and mud.

As the 1980s drew to a close, Smith’s brand officially became Smith Sport Optics, inc.

Known for innovation

Smith always continued to innovate and was on the forefront of the developments that led to the modern day world of high-tech, high-spec eyewear.

Over the years he introduced models such as the V3 goggles in 1995, which offered an unparalleled field of view and the Slider 01, which helped revolutionise the world of sports sunglasses.

These innovations were closely followed by the Warp goggle, which provided superior protection for riders and were introduced in 1998.

His company also went on to develop ChromaPop technology, which is used in a range of Smith eyewear, including ski goggles and sunglasses.

This lens technology enables wearers to benefit from superior light filtering capabilities and enhanced clarity, colour and contrast.

Modern Smith eyewear

You don’t have to be an avid skier or outdoor enthusiast to enjoy the functionality and stylish design of Smith eyewear. The brand now offers a wide range of glasses, including super-cool sunglasses and high-tech prescription glasses.

The brand hasn’t forgotten where it all started – you can still get stunning protective goggles, such as the Bobcat, which combines the coverage of goggles with the style and appeal of sunglasses.

With a focus on sustainable materials and an ongoing commitment to innovation, the brand’s eyewear collection has become a firm favourite with people around the globe.

Sports glasses

Staying true to its roots, Smith Optics offers some fabulous sports glasses and ski goggles for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits. This eyewear combines practicality, protection, style and affordability.

Brand Spotlight: Polo Ralph Lauren

Brand Spotlight: Polo Ralph Lauren

When you think of timeless style and elegance in fashion, Polo Ralph Lauren is a name that immediately comes to mind.

This world-famous brand has gained a solid reputation as a designer powerhouse and offers everything from iconic polo shirts with the famous logo of a polo player on horseback, to popular preppy styles for that smart casual look.

The brand also offers a range of accessories, including stylish eyewear. So how did it all start? Let’s dive into the history of this iconic brand.

Where it started

Polo Ralph Lauren was established in 1967 by Ralph Lauren himself. A designer by trade, Lauren brought his vision of preppy designs combined with luxury fashion to life with his brand.

Lauren was born in New York’s Bronx in 1939 as Ralph Lifshitz. According to reports, he’d always had an interest in American and British upmarket fashion.

Unsurprisingly, this was reflected in his work which especially in the early days was greatly influenced by these styles.

While working for the manufacturer Beau Brummell in the late 1960s, he decided to sell ties under the Polo label.

He then managed to get the president of the company to let him create a line of ties under his own brand and after securing a loan for $50,000, he launched Polo Ralph Lauren.

Classic American style was at the heart of the brand’s designs, making it a huge hit among people from all walks of life, from Ivy League students to professionals and celebrities.

The brand went on to become an icon in the world of fashion, both in the United States and across the world.

Expanding the brand

While Polo Ralph Lauren was originally known for its modern clothing lines, it expanded into a range of categories over the years.

Lauren introduced his first women’s shirts in 1971, all of which came with the polo player logo that has now become synonymous with the brand. Within a few years, he had launched other clothing lines, including children’s and men’s.

While Polo Ralph Lauren was quickly gaining popularity in the United States, it was in the 1980s and 1990s that it began to expand globally.

The brand became something of a status symbol in countries around the world, with many linking it to luxury, wealth and success.

Over the years, the brand expanded further, going beyond the world of high fashion. It now offers all sorts of items, from home furnishings to accessories, fragrances and eyewear.

It has even done its bit for charity with the launch of special Lauren products and services.

Since the 2000s, consumers have even been able to shop the Pink Pony collection to show their support in the fight against cancer. These sales donate  25% to 100% to cancer charities.

The brand’s mission is to make sure cancer patients have access to quality treatment by raising funds.

Well thought-out marketing such as targeted social media ads has raised demand for this collection and helped raise huge amounts of money for the cause.

Polo Ralph Lauren eyewear

Polo Ralph Lauren eyewear collection shares the same elegance, timelessness and classic design style as the clothing collections.

It combines trendy style with practicality, comfort and huge aesthetic appeal in both prescription glasses and sunglasses, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of tastes.

Brand Spotlight: Chloé

Chloé is a well-known name around the world, popular with fashionistas and respected by fashion experts. Founded in the 1950s by French fashion designer Gaby Aghion, the brand has become known for ready-to-wear fashion.

Since then, Chloé has had many famous creative directors and has consistently helped shape the fashion industry.

History of the brand

Some say Gaby Aghion coined the phrase prêt-à-porter, meaning ready-to-wear: this is what this brand is famous for. Chloé collections were more casual and affordable than the expensive outfits popular in Paris at the time and people appreciated the shift.

Aghion chose the name Chloé because of its femininity; it reflected her elegant, youthful designs. She wanted to create luxurious yet affordable ready-to-wear outfits for women wanting a change from upmarket, haute couture fashions.

Her vision succeeded; Chloé became a huge name in the fashion industry, respected and loved by fashion-conscious women and fashion professionals globally.

Creative directors at Chloé

Chloé has had big-name creative directors, such as Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney. They boosted the reputation and popularity of the brand over the years.

In the 60s and 70s, Karl Lagerfeld was creative director at Chloé. His influence impacted the brand’s identity and association with romantic, feminine and elegant designs.

In the 1990s, young designer Stella McCartney became creative director at Chloé. She brought around a fresh, youthful vibe, designing stunning signature styles that would become synonymous with the brand. This included tailored trousers and bold designs.

Pheobe Philo took over in 2001. She catapulted the brand to new heights with modern, refreshing and unique boho designs.

In 2011, Claire Waight Keller took over at Chloé. She expanded the modern bohemian style the brand had become known for under Philo.

Keller added her own twist; she injected unique vintage style into the Chloé designs, blending old and new in her designs.

Gabriela Hearst was creative director in 2020; under her leadership the brand focused on sustainability and Chloé has now become famous in sustainable fashion circles for transparent processes and the use of eco-friendly materials.

Chloé eyewear

Led by huge names in the world of fashion, Chloé is a respected brand. Aside from the stunning garments that they’re known for, they have expanded their designs into accessories such as jewellery, bags and eyewear.

Chloé eyewear offers an impressive range, including countless styles and shapes of both sunglasses and prescription glasses. These include affordable options for all face shapes, tastes and preferences.

Chloè sunglasses feature fashionable designs, with options ranging from hexagonal, to boho square and oval frames. They also feature cute round frames and diamond shaped eye-catchers, most of which can be fitted with prescription lenses.

Brand Spotlight: Marc Jacobs

We love fashion designers who know how to push the boundaries. After all, boundaries need to be tested to innovate, right?

Some designers know exactly how to do this and Marc Jacobs is one of them. Known for his bold and unique designs, his hard work and dedication have led to designs that have been shaping the fashion industry for decades.

A passion for design

So, how did Marc Jacobs get into design?

His passion for design was already evident early in life. Born in New York in the 60s, Marc Jacobs was raised by his grandmother after his mother died.

His grandmother encouraged his passion for design and Jacobs enrolled at the Parsons School of Design. During his time at Parsons, he not only excelled but won the Chester Weinberg and Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award.

man wearing marc jacobs eyeglasses

His first collection was designed in the 80s and kick-started his successful career. Since the start, his focus had been on blending trendy styles and streetwear, kicking off a whole new way of designing that gave us a glimpse into the future of design.

In 1987, he won the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent In the 1990s Jacobs designed a ‘grunge’ collection for Perry Ellis.

Unfortunately, this didn’t go quite as expected. Controversy soon arose about the collection and the brand dropped him.

That said, there’s always a silver lining and this controversy gained him a reputation as a designer with innovative ideas and the confidence to run with them.

Career: the Louis Vuitton years

Marc hit the big time in the late 90s; he became artistic director at the French fashion powerhouse Louis Vuitton, which was originally known for luggage but became a force to be reckoned with thanks to Marc’s influence.

Marc’s first task after joining Vuitton as artistic director was simply to create the first Vuitton ready-to-wear collection. Not only was this a milestone in his career, but also a turning point for Louis Vuitton.

woman wearing marc jacobs sunglasses

During his 17-year stint, he worked with various artists on Louis Vuitton collections, bringing an artistic and innovative vibe to the brand.

This included modern artists like Stephen Sprouse and Richard Prince to create some incredible limited-edition Vuitton collections.

Undoubtedly Marc Jacobs helped Louis Vuitton become a household name worldwide; many believed his input transformed it into a powerful luxury brand. Marc Jacobs left Louis Vuitton in 2013, deciding to focus on his own line under the Marc Jacobs label.

Eyewear with a creative flair

Jacobs’ creative flair and fashion talent are not confined to the realm of clothing; he offers everything from Marc Jacobs beauty products to unique Marc Jacobs eyewear.

The Best Gaming Glasses for a Next-Level Setup

The Best Gaming Glasses for a Next-Level Setup

If you’re a serious gamer, you’ve probably put some thought into choosing the best monitor, controller and headset for gaming. You may even have a specially designed chair, so you’re comfortable during all those hours in front of the screen.

But have you thought about your eyes?

Gaming glasses are a bit like computer glasses but specifically designed for gamers.

The best glasses for gaming will protect your eyes and boost your performance.

The right pair can even make the difference between a win and a terrible headache that forces you to log off early, so let’s check them out– and examine some essential features to look out for.

Anti-reflective lenses to reduce digital eye strain

All those hours spent staring at your game – often in a darkened room – expose you to a lot of glare from the screen. After a few hours of screen time, you may find yourself squinting, tearing up, or rubbing your dry eyes.

Many gamers also suffer from headaches because their eyes have been working too hard for too long.

Most glasses for gamers have an anti-reflective lens coating to reduce glare, which is great since this reduces eye strain. As a bonus, you’ll notice you can focus better as you play through the night.

Blue-light-filtering lenses to protect your sleep

Most electronic screens emit blue light rays. You need a certain amount of this light frequency during the day to stay focused.

However, too much blue light exposure, especially at night, has been proven to affect your body’s production of melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep.

Blue-light-blocking lenses filter and reduce blue light. The protection blue-light-blocking glasses offer preserves your sleep quality, so you don’t have to worry about feeling exhausted the next day.

Various gaming glasses brands offer different styles and colours of blue light filtering lenses. Some are clear while others have a cool yellow or amber tint. These tints also enhance contrast, helping you see what’s happening on your screen more clearly.

Where to buy the best gaming glasses

Now that you know what to look for you’re ready to level up, but which to buy? Here at SmartBuyGlasses we offer a wide range built specifically for comfort, come check it out.

To find our entire collection, visit our online store and apply the search filter for gaming glasses and blue light glasses. Also, choose the price range you’re looking for and specify if you need prescription lenses.

We’ll match that against our best gaming glasses frames and suggest various styles for you to choose from.

And if you can’t be bothered to search? Here are some of our most popular:

Oakley HOLBROOK

The Oakley Holbrook comes in a masculine rectangular shape with a keyhole nose piece. Designed for gamers with larger faces, it flatters round, oval and heart-shaped features.

Choose from several colourways, including Satin Black, Polished Clear and a stylish combination that fades from polished black to clear.

Gunnar Attaché Asian Fit Blue Light Blocker

Another great choice is the Gunnar Attaché Asian Fit Blue Light Blocker. This classic round frame is unisex and suits more angular, medium-sized faces. Choose from a black frame or variations of tortoiseshell.

SPY Monolith

Alternatively, go fully futuristic with SPY Monolith Gaming Glasses. This single-lens pair of gaming glasses is for men or women.

The frame is unusual both in its shape and the material it’s made of, Grilamid. This type of nylon is especially flexible and resilient, making it ideal for a tough game.

Pick your favourite pair of the best gaming glasses today to take your game to the next level. Your eyes will be grateful and it’s much easier to aim when your vision isn’t double.

Uncover the truth behind common myths about wearing glasses. Get informed about how glasses support eye health and improve vision without altering it over time.
Hands holding glasses

Myths and misconceptions have always been present throughout the centuries, regardless of discipline.

From science to common lifestyle activities, eye health and eyewear are certainly no exception and there are lots of things you may think are true that aren’t quite as they seem.

When it comes to your health, it is crucial to be well-informed in order to take proper care of it. It can be tempting to follow advice from peers and known figures, however, it is even more important to be certain of the accuracy of the information you have.

So let’s learn more about glasses myths and misconceptions about glasses, where they come from, and what the facts are.

Myth #1: Wearing your glasses constantly will worsen your eyesight

Wearing eyeglasses can be a fundamental part of the daily routine for many, as they correct refractive errors, such as astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia and presbyopia, allowing people to see clearly.

Woman holding a pair of glasses and looking at them

Taking your first eyeglasses off after prolonged use might make you feel like your vision is worse than before. While understandable, it is no more than a temporary feeling.

Fact

When wearing glasses, the corrective lenses change the way light rays fall into the eye’s spectrum, ensuring clear vision without changing the eye’s structure in any way.

The temporary feeling that your eyesight is worse simply happens due to eye strain. This happens because your eyes’ suddenly have to put in additional effort to see clearly, when they were relaxed just moments before.

In addition to this, eyes naturally age, which causes glasses prescription to get stronger. This association can lead people to believe their eyes have gotten “lazy” when in reality it’s a natural occurrence, unrelated to glasses.

Neglecting to wear prescription glasses when required will only cause strain in your eyes and possibly lead to vision issues.

Myth #2: Reading glasses are for older people

It is, in fact, quite common for people to get their first pair of reading glasses between the ages of 41 and 60.

This happens because the internal lenses of your eyes start to naturally lose flexibility from that age, and require more effort to shift the focus from different distances.

That said, this doesn’t mean that only older people use reading glasses.

Fact

While there is a strong correlation between the likelihood of developing presbyopia and aging, individuals of all ages can require reading glasses or similar corrective support for close-up tasks.

Due to increased screen time and prolonged close-focus tasks, many younger adults, particularly those in their 20s and 30s, experience eye strain or visual fatigue and seek out visual aids.

In fact, about 41.6% of U.S. adults aged 18 to 44 already use some form of corrective eyewear.

For younger people, reading glasses can be beneficial for activities that require intense focus, helping to relieve strain and improve comfort when shifting focus during prolonged close-up work.

Given today’s high levels of digital device usage, digital eye fatigue has become a common issue amongst younger crowds.

Ultimately, wearable eyeglasses for reading or other corrective lenses aren’t just for older adults; they offer valuable support for anyone looking to alleviate eye strain and improve visual comfort.

Myth #3: Glasses are only for people with terrible vision

Eyeglasses are often associated with people with very high prescriptions, which can lead people to assume that glasses aren’t needed if their vision defect is minor.

Fact

Eyeglasses are used to correct a wide range of vision problems, from minor to severe. They can provide extra comfort for even slight refractive errors, improving the quality of life. For instance, someone with a slight nearsightedness can have a much better experience with glasses when performing tasks that involve seeing further away, such as driving.

Additionally, nowadays there are many technologies that can improve eye comfort for those who require little to no prescription, such as blue light-blocking glasses to protect the eyes from digital strain and tints that protect the eyes from UV rays.

Myth #4: Always wearing your glasses will prevent your eyesight from getting worse

The idea that if you constantly wear your prescription eyeglasses your eyesight can’t decline is understandable. It’s reasonable to think that since it’s being continually protected, it won’t get worse. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Fact

Glasses are used as a tool to correct vision problems, not to prevent them. There are several factors that affect your eyesight, such as genetics, aging and lifestyle choices.

While eyeglasses can’t prevent changes in your eye anatomy from occurring, they can provide you with vision correction, extra comfort and protection.

There are however other actions you can take to protect your eye health, so if you’re looking to prevent your vision from worsening, you should focus on healthy habits such as taking breaks from long close-up tasks and regular check-ups with your doctor.

DID YOU KNOW?

Eyeglasses have been around for over 700 years—the first pair was made in Italy in the 13th century.

Myth #5: Wearing the wrong prescription can damage your sight

Have you ever tried wearing someone’s glasses to see how strong they were? Or maybe to see how they would look on you? If the prescription was very incompatible with you, chances are you instantly experienced blurred vision and discomfort.

It is understandable why you would assume that no good can come from doing that, especially when it comes to your long-term eye health.

Man rubbing eyes under eyeglasses

Fact

Although wearing the incorrect prescription can cause immediate strain, discomfort and even headaches, these are just temporary symptoms. Once you stop wearing those lenses, your eyes will return to normal, causing the vision distortion to stop.

The incorrect prescription will not cause any long-term damage. However, if you feel regular eye strain and discomfort, it is wise to check in with a doctor.

Myth #6: Blue light glasses can prevent all strain

Due to their rise in popularity, many think that blue light glasses are protective enough to stop any kind of eye strain from happening. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Lights reflecting from glasses lens

Fact

The main purpose of blue light glasses is to aid in reducing eye strain from extended digital use. This strain often occurs from reduced blinking, focusing at a fixed distance for long periods and screen brightness.

By limiting blue light exposure, your quality of sleep can improve.

However, eye strain can be caused by factors unrelated to blue light, such as performing close-up tasks for a long period of time or reading in a dark setting.

Luckily there are other ways to prevent eye strain. For instance, you can apply the 20-20-20 rule to take breaks from tasks that require prolonged focus –and adjust the light in the environment

What you should really know about glasses

It is inevitable for common myths surrounding eyeglasses to exist. That said, regardless of what people may think they are actually powerful tools that have been helping people see clearly for centuries.

Designed to correct specific vision issues, they enhance comfort and even contribute to overall eye health: they don’t worsen or improve eyesight over time.

Being well-informed about topics that can directly impact your health is essential for a higher quality of life. Ultimately, regular eye exams and healthy habits are essential to maintaining good vision.

Routine eye exams are essential to detect any changes in your prescription and make sure that it’s always updated to reflect your vision needs.

Alongside staying on top of your prescription, adopting healthy eye habits like managing screen time and resting your eyes can also contribute significantly to maintaining good vision throughout your life.

And if you still have doubts about any of these myths, don’t fret. Dispensing Opticians are here to help so feel free to ask them for any clarifications.
