Brand Spotlight: Coach

Brand Spotlight: Coach

Coach began in 1941 in Manhattan, New York, as a small business operating from a family-run workshop. It started as a company specialising in high-quality woven leather goods, including handmade leather wallets.

The company has since expanded its range and is now known around the world for luxury fashion and accessories.

Where did it begin?

So, where did the Coach journey begin?

It was started by six artisans whose vision was to design hand-crafted leather goods that were both practical and stunning. Under the leadership of Lillian and Miles Cahn, it grew to become the Original American House of Leather.

A pivotal moment occurred when  Lillian Cahn suggested they start making women’s handbags. This was a great idea and the need for these accessories catapulted the company into the fashion industry’s spotlight.

In the early 1960s, Miles Cahn hired Bonnie Cashin as a lead designer, who brought a quirky edge with her colourfully bold and innovative design ideas. This gave the brand a fresh identity, reflecting the shift in New York culture in the 60s.

Among other things, she created the unique Coach turn-lock closure, which remains a signature element of the luxury brand to this day.

Continued growth

Coach continued to grow over the coming decades, opening its first shop on the famous Madison Avenue.

This cemented its reputation as a luxury brand with international appeal and many fell in love with its New York-inspired designs.

By the late 80s and 90s, Coach expanded its product line, now ranging from footwear to clothes. Despite increasing its range, the brand continued to prioritise quality, durability and fine craftsmanship.

Led by CEO Lew Frankfort, the company continued growing in the 2000s. It expanded its retail venues and started to create ready-to-wear collections that blended classic design with contemporary appeal and style.

Coach’s global appeal was further enhanced by offering luxury apparel and accessories at affordable prices, making it a big hit among fashion-conscious people on a budget.

In 2013, Stuart Vevers came on board as a creative director, and his vision led to a reinvention of the fashion brand.

Vevers incorporated fresh energy into the brand’s traditional designs, adding fun notes of street style and pop culture to them. This had a big positive impact, making the brand popular with the younger generation and boosting sales.

Coach eyewear

Among the many accessories now offered by Coach, there is a stylish collection of eyewear that includes both prescription glasses and sunglasses

Coach’s eyeglasses collection offers a variety of styles, all of which are synonymous with quality and trendy design.

A Guide to Glasses in Jirai Kei Fashion

A Guide to Glasses in Jirai Kei Fashion

In Japan, Jirai Kei translates to ‘landmine style’ and has become a popular subculture in the world of fashion.

Jirai Kei fashion is known for blending femininity with a darker vibe and, as many fashion subcultures are, it’s seen as a valuable form of self-expression.

Soft fabrics and girly colours are combined with darker detailing and tones to create a unique expressive style.

The overall look conveys a blend of innocence and darkness, mixing intrigue and mystery with playfulness and sweetness.

With many younger people in Japan embracing the style, it is steadily gaining popularity and has started trending online. Known for its subtlety and wearability, Jirai Kei fashion is not only confined to outfits but also accessories, including eyewear.

When it comes to glasses, there are a number of styles that can help you achieve the Jirai Kei feel. Eyewear in Japan is an important accessory, and wearers put a lot of effort into finding the perfect glasses to match their style and personality.

Of the various eyewear styles that have gained popularity within this subculture, here’s which ones we think work best.

The role of glasses in Jirai Kei fashion

Glasses have come to play a very important part in this fashion trend. Though they are of course also worn for practical purposes, they are also an essential accessory that showcases the wearer’s style, personality and emotions.

Top Jirai Kei eyewear styles

Those who embrace Jirai Kei fashion often choose glasses that make a statement, reflect their personality and add a little mystery or sophistication to their overall look.

Some of the popular frame styles in this fashion subculture include:

Round oversized frames

One of the styles that has become a popular choice in Jirai Kei fashion is oversized round glasses.

This style is ideal for highlighting the innocent feel associated with Jirai Kei outfits, and the round shape helps create a more youthful appearance with a softer finish.

The larger size of the frames helps attract attention to the eyes, which are known as the windows to the soul; this fits in perfectly with the sensitive side of this subculture.

As for colours, you have a lot of choices. Some prefer to match neutral frame colours with pastel-coloured outfits, while others like to create a contrasting look with darker frames.

Glasses with tinted lenses

Another popular choice among those interested in this fashion trend is glasses with tinted lenses. Not only do these make a statement, but they also convey a slightly other-worldly look.

Lens colours such as pale blue, pink and purple are popular because of this dreamy, quirky finish.

They also go well with the pastel colours that are often worn within this subculture, making it easy to create a look that is unique, whimsical and verging on enchanting.

Thin metal frames

In Jirai Kei fashion thin metal frames have been gaining popularity, likely because they contribute a feel of elegance and sophistication to a minimalistic look.

Popular colour options include silver, gold and rose gold, and these frames are ideal for both casual and formal outfits.

In addition to their elegant simplicity and versatility, the frames also help to create a softer look thanks to their sleek and delicate frames that highlight the subtle feminine aspect of Jirai Kei fashion.

Frames with detailing

Glasses frames with detailing are also a big hit with Jirai Kei fashion enthusiasts since they add a playful touch to any ensemble. They look refined and elegant, but are also able to contribute to the bold and daring feel of an outfit.

Lots of different embellishments have become popular among fans of this fashion trend, from diamante features and rhinestones to elegant chains and lace patterns.

Jirai Kei fashion is known for its detailed design principles, and these frames fit in with this perfectly.

Transparent frames

The combination of modern style and subtlety makes transparent frames a great choice in Jirai Kei fashion.

Clear frames have become a big hit among many fans of this subculture, and transparent frames in colours such as pale blue and pink are also popular.

The softness and femininity of these frames are in sharp contrast to the darker aspect of this fashion trend, and transparent frames help the focus stay on the clothing while still adding detail and personality to a look.

These frames are mostly worn by people who want to wear understated accessories that don’t dominate the overall look.

Cat-eye frames

There is a bold edge to Jirai Kei fashion and wearing cat-eye frames is the perfect way to embrace this. With vintage flair and a statement design, these frames have the opposite effect of transparent frames.

These are daring, expressive and add a dynamic finish to outfits.

When coupled with the feminine, soft pastels and delicate designs of Jirai Kei outfits, these frames draw attention and take centre stage.

There are various colours to choose from, which means wearers can choose both something that contrasts sharply with their clothing or frames that match the colour of their outfit.

Heart-shape frames

One of the other popular choices in Jirai Kei fashion is heart-shaped frames. Like tinted glasses, these are on the whimsical, quirky side, which makes them ideal for this fashion style.

They add a touch of playfulness and fun to your look, and you can choose from a range of frame colours, including pastel shades that fit in perfectly with the Jirai Kei theme.

A combination of soft and bold

Jirai Kei fashion is a combination of soft and bold, and this unique blend extends to eyewear. The frames outlined above have become popular with fans of this fashion style for many reasons.

Some frames provide a sharply contrasting look, while others highlight the femininity and softness of Jirai Kei fashion.

The right frames also make it easier for wearers to express themselves visually and make a statement, which are both important aspects of Jirai Kei fashion.

Glasses and contact lenses are two common methods for vision correction, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.

In today’s world of vision correction, choosing your everyday method doesn’t only depend on eye health needs, but personal preference and lifestyle.

Whether you’re a longtime glasses wearer and considering switching to contacts, or you’re exploring your options after getting your first prescription, understanding the advantages and drawbacks of each option can help you make an informed decision.

Let’s take a look into what each offers to help you find what will work best for you.

An overview of glasses

Glasses are the traditional and most widely used form of vision correction. They come in a variety of types, offering solutions for different needs.

Three frames of glasses

Beyond vision correction, they can be customised with specialised lenses and add-ons that not only improve visual clarity but also enhance comfort, protection and adapt to various lifestyle needs.

Types of lenses for glasses

Single vision lenses: Designed to correct a single vision issue, such as hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), or astigmatism.

Progressive lenses: Provide clear vision from multiple distances all in one pair of frames. Ideal for those with presbyopia.

Prism lenses: Correct double vision, also known as diplopia.

Reading lenses: Designed to enlarge the viewing area, aiding with close-up tasks.

Occupational lenses: Optimise vision for near and intermediate distances, reducing strain from prolonged screen use.

Prescription sunglass lenses: Combine UV light protection with vision correction.

Add-ons

Tinted lenses: Available in a range of colours, these lenses enhance contrast and visual clarity in certain environments, while offering a subtle reduction in brightness and a personalised style.

Polarised lenses: Reduce glare from reflective surfaces, such as water, snow and car windows, enhancing visibility and comfort in bright environments.

Mirrored lenses: Feature a reflective coating that significantly limits the amount of light entering the eyes, ideal for bright, sunny environments while adding a bold, fashionable look.

You can check out our lens hub page for more detailed information about each type of lens.

Pros of glasses

The most notable attribute of glasses is convenience: glasses are easy! You simply put them on and you’re good to go. They are low-maintenance and there’s no need to worry about sanitising precautions when handling them.

Unlike contact lenses, they can also act as a barrier against dust, wind and other environmental irritants. With the add-ons, you can even add an extra layer of customised protection.

Even though they can be pricier upfront when compared to contact lenses, they can last for years if properly taken care of, making them a more cost-effective option over time.

Finally, they come in a variety of styles and colours, adding an extra touch to your everyday look. Nowadays, there is a type of frame for every face shape, personal taste and lifestyle.

Cons of glasses

Although various benefits come with this option, there are some inconveniences to consider.

Glasses can sometimes be uncomfortable due to minor design features or differences in facial structure, which may cause them to slip down your nose or put pressure on your ears. It is best to acknowledge why they are causing discomfort and how to fix it.

They also limit peripheral vision and can create distortion or blurriness at the edges, especially for those with strong prescriptions or astigmatism.

In certain weather conditions, glasses are prone to fogging up and may smudge or scratch if not properly cared for, making them less compatible with certain active activities.

SmartBuyGlasses carries various lens coatings, such as scratch-resistant and superhydrophobic that can help avoid these problems.

Glasses can also be easy to lose, which is especially problematic for individuals with high prescriptions who rely on them to see.

Additionally, some may not like how they look in glasses, but with the wide variety of styles available, along with tools like our Virtual Try-On,  finding a flattering pair has become easier.

An overview of contact lenses

Contact lenses are thin, curved lenses that sit directly on the surface of your eye “cornea”. They correct vision issues in the same way as glasses while offering a more natural field of vision.

While contact lenses can assist with some eye alignment issues, they do not provide prism correction when prescribed

Types of contact lenses

Soft contacts: Made up of silicone and hydrogel, promoting breathability and comfort. However, options may be more limited for those requiring high astigmatism correction (high cylinder).

Hard (RGP) contacts: Made of silicone-containing compounds. Although it is not as initially comfortable as soft contacts, they provide sharper vision, good for people with dry eyes and high prescriptions.

Multifocal contact lenses: Available in both soft and hard contact lens material.  Combining prescriptions for multiple distance vision, these are perfectly suitable for those who suffer from presbyopia.

Monthly vs daily contact lenses

Monthly contact lenses: Often more cost-effective, as they are reusable for up to 30 days with proper cleaning and care. They are durable and made from breathable materials, making them a good option for those who wear contacts every day.

Daily contact lenses: Single-use lenses that are discarded after being worn for the day. They offer ultimate convenience since they don’t require daily cleaning or storage, making them hassle-free.

Dailies are a great choice for those who want a low-maintenance option and only wear contacts occasionally. However, options for high astigmatism correction in soft daily lenses are more limited.

You can access this guide to learn about the different contact lens brands and find options that suit your specific needs, whether you prioritise comfort, vision sharpness, or convenience.

Pros of contact lenses

Contact lenses offer several advantages, including a wider field of vision since they rest directly on the eye, providing unobstructed peripheral vision for a more natural and seamless experience.

This is a great advantage for active individuals, as they also stay in place without interfering with activities, unlike glasses. Contacts do not fog up due to changes in weather, hot drinks, or face masks, ensuring clear vision in all conditions.

Their concealed appearance makes them nearly invisible, allowing you to maintain your natural look while also giving you the freedom to wear non-prescription frames like sunglasses.

Additionally, coloured contact lenses provide a fun option for those looking to change or enhance their eye colour for special occasions or everyday wear.

Cons of contact lenses

Although they can be very practical, contact lenses come with a few drawbacks, primarily due to their high maintenance requirements.

A proper contacts cleaning routine is crucial to prevent infections and more serious issues, like corneal damage. It is also essential to avoid sleeping in them.

Contacts can also cause irritation, particularly when worn for extended periods, as they may lead to dry eyes or discomfort, especially in environments with dry air or low humidity.

For beginners, inserting and removing contacts can feel challenging, as it involves direct eye contact. Proper insertion techniques are crucial for both comfort and eye health. If you’re new to contacts, our step-by-step guide can make the process easier.

There are also limitations in eye correction options, as mentioned previously. Contact lenses don’t correct prism, which is used for certain eye alignment issues.

Additionally, daily contact lenses have fewer options for those needing high astigmatism correction (high cylinder), particularly in soft lens materials.

DID YOU KNOW?

More than 45 million Americans wear contact lenses, with many switching between glasses and contacts based on convenience. Interestingly, about 75% of adults with vision correction opt for glasses, but many also use contact lenses part-time.

Which one is the best choice for me?

The decision between glasses and contact lenses depends on your lifestyle, comfort preferences and vision needs.

One hand holding a pair of glasses, one hand holding a contact lens case

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance and cost-effective option, glasses may be a better choice. On the other hand, if you live an active lifestyle and need constant unobstructed vision, contacts could be more convenient.

Many people find that combining glasses and contacts offers the best of both worlds.

Some prefer glasses for everyday wear and contacts for special occasions, sports, or more active days. Contrarily, others prefer to wear contacts daily for constant clear vision while using glasses for specific tasks like reading or working at the computer.

On the right side, there's an icon of two contact lenses with the word "Lenses" below. For glasses, the benefits are: easy to use and maintain, various add-ons available, acts as protection from dust and wind, a variety of styles to choose from, and long-lasting durability. For lenses, the benefits are: provides a full field of vision, ideal for active individuals, invisible appearance, doesn't fog up, and compatible with non-prescription eyewear.

Exploring a combination of both can be a great option. Just remember that prescriptions for glasses and contacts can be different, so you’ll need separate prescriptions for each.

How to find the best glasses or contact lenses

Finding the right glasses or contact lenses starts with a visit to an eye care professional. They will assess your vision needs and recommend a solution tailored to you.

Whether you choose a flattering pair of frames to express your style, or contacts for their convenience, you should prioritise a correct fit which provides clear vision and comfort.

Brand Spotlight: Nike

Nike’s famous slogan “Just do it” perfectly expresses this pioneering company’s approach to business.

With a long history of challenging the status quo through product innovations and unique marketing strategies, Nike has taken everything sport-related to new levels of style and performance.

Let’s explore their trajectory to success.

Blue Ribbon Sports' rise to fame

The company, originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS), was founded in 1964 by a track and field coach from Oregon, Bill Bowerman and one of his former students, Philip Knight.

The first products Blue Ribbon Sports sold were running shoes imported from a Japanese company called Onitsuka Tiger.

However, following a disagreement over the Tiger Cortez model – co-designed by Coach Bill Bowerman – the two companies went their separate ways in 1971.

Man wearing Nike mirrored sunglasses

The business was then rebranded as Nike Inc. in honour of the Greek goddess of Victory. Nike began to produce its own line of products and the controversial shoe became the Nike Cortez, falling under the company’s own brand.

Around the same time, Carolyn Davis, a student at Portland State University, designed the Nike Swoosh logo. Along with “Just do it,” it’s now one of the most highly recognised trademarks in the world and seen on many high-profile athletes.

First innovations in athletic shoes

Also in 1971, inspired by his wife’s waffle iron, Bowerman came up with the idea for a new sole design for Nike running shoes. In this pivotal moment in Nike’s history, the Waffle Trainer was born, taking athletic shoes to a new level.

Since then, some of the most groundbreaking Nike brand shoes include:

  • Nike Air Force 1 in 1982
  • Air Max 90 in 1990
  • Nike Dunk SB in 2002
  • Nike Pro Combat in 2009
  • Nike Mag in 2011
  • Nike Vaporfly in 2017
  • Air Max Scorpion in 2022

Driven by scientific research from its lab, the company is always looking for new ways to improve Nike products.

Innovation at Nike can be seen across the board, such as in their work to enhance the efficiency of product lines, develop interesting features like a self-lacing shoe, or experiment with a new technological composition.

For example, in 2023, as part of Nike’s Move to Zero sustainability campaign, Nike announced it would discontinue kangaroo leather completely and replace it with their new synthetic upper.

Brilliant marketing

Man exercising wearing Nike sunglasses

Competitors at track meets may have been the first fans of the Nike footwear brand, but very early on, the business understood the power of marketing.

In 1976, John Brown & Partners designed their first ad campaign, “There is no finish line.”

Nike’s strategy also included sponsoring top athletes and sports teams across different sports.

Following a decline in sales in 1984, this strategy paid off in spades. In 1985, the Nike company rose to popular attention when it sponsored one of the world’s most famous basketball players, Michael Jordan.

They also sponsored the fine he had to pay after every game because his shoes contravened team uniform regulations. The Air Jordan was born and subsequently, the Jordan brand.

Nowadays, Nike sponsors a myriad of high-profile athletes and celebrities from the entertainment world and is the official supplier of the NFL.

Growth and expansion

Nike expanded outside the US in 1991, forming Nike International Ltd. That same year, it also launched an online store, adding online sales to its profits.

Nike, Inc. is now the world’s biggest sports business and fitness company, with an annual revenue of over $51 billion for the 2024 fiscal year. The current Executive Chairman is Mark G. Parker.

As a testament to this valuable brand, which started as just one of many footwear companies, in 1991 a pair of Nike shoes sold at auction for $437,500.

This amount more than doubled the previous record for a pair of Converse shoes in 1984. The buyer was a Canadian investor and car collector, Miles Nadal.

Nike, Inc. products now include athletic footwear, clothes, sports equipment, services like personal training apps and accessories for every sporting need, including eyewear.

Nike eyewear

As with all their products, Nike eyeglasses combine quality, style and durability.

The Nike eyewear collection blends classic frame shapes with sporty styling. Choose from sophisticated metal frames, modern semi-rimless styles, or eye-catching, thick-rimmed designs that make a statement.

There are even clip-on options for maximum versatility.

Nike eyeglasses

You also have a choice of frame shape, material and colour and can select from single-vision, progressive or gradient lenses.

Woman wearing Nike eyeglasses

The frames are lightweight and flexible yet rugged enough to withstand outdoor adventures. They don’t slip and their vented frames ensure they don’t fog up either, so you always have perfect vision.

Moving over to Nike sunglasses, each pair is designed for a particular sports category, for example, Nike golf, running, or baseball glasses.

Here, wrap-around frames truly come into their own. You also get to choose from polarized or mirrored lenses for a little more sun protection (and an added air of mystery).

Nike wraparound sunglasses

If you’re only an armchair sports enthusiast though, don’t let that hold you back. There’s an athlete in everyone and likewise, a pair of Nike glasses for you. Interpret the Nike catchline of See Sport BetterTM as you like!

Nike sport sunglasses

Now all you need to do is choose your favourite pair of Nike glasses from our extensive SmartBuyGlasses range.

And if you’re still undecided about investing in Nike eyewear, the best advice we can give you is “Just do it.”

Gear Up to Ride: The Top Cycling Sunglasses for Every Biker

Nothing compares to being out on the road with your peloton, riding in harmony with the elements and each other. And a big part of making that happen is your equipment, including your bike and your cycling sunglasses.

The best cycling sunglasses are both functional and stylish—because let’s face it, that counts too. They help you see clearly, protect your eyes and keep you riding at your best.

But what is it about an excellent pair of cycling glasses that makes such a difference to your cycling performance?

Let’s check out the elements involved.

Excellent coverage and protection

One of the primary jobs of a great pair of cycling sunglasses is to protect your eyes while you’re riding at speed.

First, there’s the wind to worry about. The last thing you need is for your eyes to tear up, so you can’t see the road ahead.

Then consider everything that might potentially be in the air as you pass through, like dust, insects, grit and stones, especially if you’re mountain biking. And there are even the inconvenient bits of branches that can harm your eyes if they get hit.

To address these challenges, some cycling glasses have a massive lens size – or even one single lens – while others have smaller lenses that wrap around the edges.

When you’re looking for new cycling sunglasses, check for excellent optical clarity, including in your peripheral vision, plus full coverage either from a large lens or a wraparound design to protect your eyes.

A very secure fit

When you’re riding a mountain bike over rough terrain, you want your riding glasses to stay firmly in place.

Rimless cycling glasses may give you the best field of vision, but because they’re not as rigid as full-frame glasses, they’re not always as secure.

Half-rimmed frames are often a good compromise, especially if they have an adjustable nose piece that you can fit to your face.

Then look for temple arms that grip without squeezing, even when you’re sweating. Cycling glasses sometimes have tacky rubber inserts to give them more traction.

Also, make sure the arms can fit comfortably under your cycling helmet straps.

Versatile lens options

One of the biggest challenges when you’re cycling through the seasons and for many hours at a time is that the light conditions change. For example, although mirrored lenses work well in bright sunshine, they’re not very effective in low light.

The best cycling glasses can cope with varying light conditions, from bright sun to deep shade or even darkness, where only clear lenses will work. Some have built-in technology that automatically deals with any light level.

Some cycling sunglasses have interchangeable lenses with different lens tints.

For example, they might come with three lenses: a dark lens or mirror lens for bright sunlight, a yellow or orange lens for medium light conditions and low light conditions and a clear lens for night riding.

Then you can carry your spare lenses with you and simply swap them out as you need them.

Another option is photochromic lenses, which darken when exposed to bright light and return to clear as the light dims. Photochromic lenses are very useful if you’re riding through a variety of terrains.

You don’t have to carry a spare lens with you or worry about lens swapping on the move.

Note that photochromatic lenses are not the same as lenses enhanced with ChromaPop™ technology. Photochromic sunglasses darken when exposed to UV light, while ChromaPop™ boosts colour contrast.

One thing you don’t want when cycling is polarised lenses. While they do cut the glare, they can also interfere with depth perception and prevent you from seeing water on the road, which could be dangerous.

UV protection

Because you’re exposed to harmful UV rays when you’re out riding, your cycling sunglasses lenses need to have UV protection. The sun can cause severe damage to your eyes, both immediately and in the long term.

Note that just because they have a darker lens tint, doesn’t mean your cycling sunglasses have a high level of protection. Check for the UVA and UVB protection labels to be sure.

Rx friendly

If you need vision correction and wear prescription glasses on a daily basis, you’ll want to make sure your cycling sunglasses are compatible with prescription lenses.

Of course, if you prefer wearing contact lenses, you can simply wear glasses for cycling with normal lenses over those.

Some of the best cycling sunglasses for you

With all that in mind, let’s explore some of the best cycling sunglasses picks from our range. Each of these has specific features, so consider which one will work best for your particular needs.

Sunglasses Smith Wildcat cycling sunglasses

This unisex pair of cycling glasses features one large lens in the frame. It comes with two separate lenses, one red mirrored lens and another spare clear lens.

It’s also possible to get replacement lenses in a range of colours, all embedded with colour-enhancing ChromaPop™ technology. Then you can simply swap lenses as you choose.

With visible light transmission of only 15%, these provide excellent protection in bright sunlight.

The Spy Flynn 5050 sunglasses feature a bold, oversized wraparound design, offering a modern and edgy look. These unisex sunglasses come with polarised, mirrored lenses that provide excellent UV protection while reducing glare.

The impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses enhance colour and contrast, making them perfect for outdoor adventures

Sunglasses Sinner Cayo cycling sunglasses

Sinner Cayo cycling glasses also have a full-rim, wraparound frame for good protection from the wind and sun. The red mirrored lenses are lightweight polycarbonate and dramatically reduce glare in bright sunlight.

They come at a very reasonable price and as a bonus, while many cycling glasses are not prescription lens compatible, these are suitable for most prescriptions.

Sunglasses Bolle Chimera polarized cycling sunglasses

These cycling sunglasses are made from lightweight, heat-resistant TR 90 nylon in grey frost. Brown Pink, almond-shaped polarised lenses complete the unusual colourway, while reducing glare and providing excellent UV protection.

They also offer a wide field of view and are kept in place with grippy rubber nose pads and temple tips.

Revo Descend N polarized cycling glasses

These Revo cycling glasses are unisex with narrow, rectangular mirror lenses. The brown mirrored tint and LMS™ technology filter blue light, offering clear vision in all conditions.

This is in contrast to darker lenses, which tend to restrict vision in low-light conditions.

While these don’t offer the same level of coverage as some of the other cycling sunglasses, they can also be worn for everyday use.

See the Track to Stay on Track: Best Sunglasses for Runners

See the Track to Stay on Track: Best Sunglasses for Runners

Whether you’re a beginner runner or a seasoned pro, your running gear matters. The best sunglasses for runners can make all the difference to your comfort and safety – and therefore your enjoyment of the run.

Even the best running sunglasses won’t magically turn you into a star athlete but they will protect your eyes and help you see the terrain more clearly. And if you’re racing against time, those advantages may enhance your performance.

Let’s explore what you need to know about the best running sunglasses, so you can make sure you’re perfectly equipped for your next run.

What to look for in running glasses

If you’re a pro athlete, you’ll probably need performance sunglasses, which could potentially cost you a pretty penny. For the rest of us, you simply need quality running sunglasses with some specific characteristics.

Man running wearing running sunglasses

UV protection

Ultraviolet light can cause damage to your corneas and lead to eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. And harmful UV rays don’t just burn your skin either – sunburned eyes (a condition known as photokeratitis) can be very painful.

The best running sunglasses should offer good UV protection against the sun’s harmful rays. To make sure of this, look for proof that your running sunglasses protect against UVA and UVB rays.

Also, bear in mind that larger lenses give you more coverage (and might help prevent wrinkles too).

Glare protection

The last thing you need when you’re on the road or trail is to stumble and fall because you’re blinded by the glare.

Darker lenses help to reduce glare in bright conditions. Check the details of your running sunglasses to find out how much visible light transmission they allow. When you’re running in bright sunlight, the lower the number, the better.

However, if you often run in variable or low light conditions, you may want to consider photochromic lenses (also known as photochromatic lenses).

Photochromic sunglasses darken when exposed to bright light and lighten again as the environment grows dimmer.

Yet another option for variable conditions is interchangeable lenses.

If the frame allows for interchangeable lenses, your running glasses will normally come with lens options, including clear lenses and darker ones, so you can switch them out as necessary.

Running sunglasses also sometimes have polarised lenses. These are designed to reduce glare by filtering bright light reflecting off surfaces like pavements, water and snow.

Note that polarised sunglasses for runners do change depth perception, which can be a problem if you’re running over very uneven terrain.

At certain angles, polarised running sunglasses also make it difficult to read your phone or your watch. In these cases, non-polarised lenses might serve you better.

A perfect fit

Running is a high-impact sport. You don’t want your running sunglasses to slide down your nose, bounce around, or fall off and get damaged.

They also shouldn’t be so tight that they put pressure on your nose bridge, temples, or ears, or you could end up with a headache.

Start by looking for the right size glasses for you. Each pair of sunglasses for runners will have specific measurements, often printed on the insides of the temple arms.

If you’re buying online, the website will generally tell you if a pair is designed for a small, medium, or large face.

Also look for adjustable nose pads, which can help you finetune the fit. Some pairs of running sunglasses even have interchangeable nose pads.

Light and durable frames

A lightweight frame means you can put your running sunglasses on and forget about them.

The weight comes from the design – for example, rimless sunglasses are lighter- as well as both the frame material and the lens material.

Light nylon or plastic frames are very popular, often paired with impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses.

Anti-scratch lens coatings on top of a polycarbonate lens give a little extra protection too, in case you drop your running sunglasses or they fall off.

Anti-fogging features

When it’s cold outside and you’re working up a sweat, the heat from your face interacting with cold running glasses can cause fogging. You may also get fogging if you’re running in a very humid area.

The shape of the frame can make a big difference here, as can specially designed anti-fogging vents. Finally, hydrophobic coatings ensure that any water that accumulates on the lenses of your running sunglasses simply runs off.

Our pick of sunglasses for runners

Now that you know what to look for in a good pair of running sunglasses, let’s take a look at some great choices for you.

Sunglasses Oakley SYLAS

This pair of Oakley running sunglasses has polished clear frames with Prizm™ Sapphire Blue Mirror lenses. Prizm lens technology is specially designed for glare reduction and to boost depth perception, so you can clearly see where you’re putting your feet.

These quality sunglasses come in large or extra-large sizes and are suitable for prescription lenses. The rounded rectangular design is masculine and looks great on round, oval, or heart-shaped faces.

You could even use your Oakley sunglasses for other sports too or as casual sunglasses as you go about the rest of your day.

The style comes in other frame and lens colours too, also with Prizm lenses. And in case you need vision correction, they are compatible with Rx lenses.

Sunglasses Uller Volcano

This unisex performance eyewear from Uller is designed for professional athletes. It has a single interchangeable lens with one option for sunny days and another for dimmer light conditions.

This variation has a white frame and green tints but there’s a range of colour choices available.

The frame of these running sunglasses is made of Tr90, a Swiss thermoplastic that’s extremely light, flexible and durable. The lenses are also lightweight and impact-resistant, and they offer good UV protection.

Non-slip nose pieces are useful for keeping your sunglasses in place on the move.

This pair of semi-rimless Prada running sunglasses has a very futuristic look. The dark grey lens colour gives excellent protection from bright sunlight, and the wraparound design reduces light leakage from the sides.

The frame is lightweight nylon, which is strong and heat-resistant. The polyamide lenses are hypoallergenic, as well as scratch and chemical-resistant. The nose pad both protects the edges of the lens and keeps these running sunglasses on your face.

Sunglasses Nike Windtrack

If your wallet doesn’t stretch to more expensive sunglasses, you can still get a decent pair of running sunglasses at a lower price. Designed for men, these Nike sunglasses are some of the best budget running sunglasses around.

These running sunglasses don’t come with polarised lenses. However, they do wrap around your face, giving you good protection from bright light, as well as dust, insects and stray twigs if you’re trail running under trees.

The brown colour lenses are a good option for a variety of light conditions and also enhance blue and green backgrounds.

Whatever price range you’re looking for, you’ll get a high-quality pair of sunglasses for running from SmartBuyGlasses. With our 100-day return guarantee and 24-month warranty, you never need to worry if you’ve made the right choice.

So what are you waiting for?

What Causes Distorted Vision?

Distorted vision alters how objects appear in size, shape, or alignment. It can result from refractive errors, temporary or more serious conditions.
Two buildings seen through distorted vision

Distorted vision, also known as vision disturbances, directly affects the ability to see familiar objects, causing them to appear different in size, shape, or alignment.

Straight lines may appear bent and flat objects may appear rounded. It is often a symptom of a greater eye or overall health issue.

Various factors can cause this issue, ranging from refractive errors like myopia and astigmatism to temporary conditions like eye infections.

In more severe cases, conditions like glaucoma may be the cause. Identifying the source is crucial for proper treatment.

Types of Distorted Vision

There are several types of distorted vision, each affecting how objects are perceived. Two very common examples are blurred and double vision.

Blurred Vision

Blurred vision occurs when objects appear hazy or out of focus, making it difficult to see fine details.

High view of forest. Left half blurry, right half normal

Symptoms may include difficulty focusing, squinting, headaches, and eye strain. Temporary causes of blurry vision may also include fatigue, eye strain from prolonged screen use, or prolonged exposure to bright light.

If you’re experiencing blurry vision, it would be advisable to discuss it with your optometrist, as it may indicate refractive errors, such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, as well as eye conditions like cataracts and dry eye syndrome

Double Vision

Commonly known as “diplopia”, double vision occurs when the eyes are not aligned properly or are unable to work together to focus on the same point, causing the person to see two images of a single object either side-by-side, on top of each other, or both.

Two hands facing up. Hand on the left is doubled, hand on the right is normal

Some of the symptoms can include headaches, eye drooping, dizziness, and eye pain when moving the eyes.

DID YOU KNOW?

Certain medications, including those for high blood pressure and allergies, can cause visual distortions as side effects.

Causes of Distortions

Vision disturbances may indicate underlying health issues, requiring attention and care. Some of their potential causes are:

Refractive errors: Myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism can all cause light to focus incorrectly, resulting in visual disturbances.

Eye Conditions: Cataracts, dry eye syndrome and corneal damage can cloud or blurred vision.

Other causes: More serious conditions like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, or macular degeneration can damage the retina or optic nerve, distorting sight and potentially leading to vision loss.

Related Symptoms

While distorted vision is often a primary symptom of a health-related condition, it can also be accompanied by other symptoms depending on the potential underlying cause.

Blurry or fuzzy vision, eye strain and frequent squinting, especially when attempting to focus on distant or nearby objects are usually symptoms related to refractive errors.

When it comes to other eye problems, cataracts can cause haziness and halos around lights, while dry eye syndrome may lead to burning, stinging, or redness. Corneal damage can result in distorted or cloudy vision.

Serious health conditions may cause blind spots, wavy lines, or a loss of peripheral vision, potentially leading to vision loss if untreated.

Risks Related to Distorted Vision

Although not all vision distortion can be prevented, certain risk factors increase the likelihood of developing this issue. These include:

  • Wearing an incorrect prescription for glasses or contact lenses
  • Failing to wear sunglasses outdoors
  • Failing to seek medical attention after an eye or head injury
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes
  • Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption

By acknowledging these risk factors, you can reduce the chances of experiencing distorted vision and protect your eye health.

Treatments and Prevention

Fortunately, there are several treatments to correct distorted vision. However, it is essential to first consult with an eye doctor or get a comprehensive eye exam to identify the underlying causes of the issue.

Some common distorted vision treatment options are:

Eye exams: The Amsler grid test checks for visual distortions, while additional tests such as blood and urine tests, CT scans, and dry eye assessments evaluate moisture levels in the eyes. These tests help identify the underlying causes of distorted vision.

Woman getting an eye exam

Corrective lenses: If refractive errors are causing vision distortion, prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses may be an option to restore clear vision.

Medications: Prescription eye drops can treat distortion-causing conditions such as conjunctivitis and dry eye syndrome.

Surgery: Surgical options may be necessary depending on the severity of the condition, including procedures for cataracts, retinal detachment, and keratoconus.

Emergency Care: Sudden changes in vision, such as severe headaches, loss of muscle control, or facial drooping, may indicate a medical emergency and require immediate attention.

Stay on top of your Eye Health

Although visual distortions don’t typically pose immediate risks, some cases may require urgent medical attention. If you experience sudden distorted or blurred vision, don’t wait—contact your optometrist right away.

You can also ask one of our opticians if you have any more questions about refractive errors or general eye health

Being proactive can help protect your vision and overall eye health. Remember, early detection is key to effective treatment.
