In the 1930s, as planes reached record altitudes, US Air Force pilots confronted a severe challenge: headaches and altitude sickness, caused in part by the sun’s harsh glare.

Colonel John A. Macready, the founding father of Ray-Ban, took matters into his own hands and, with the help of Bausch & Lomb, created a groundbreaking solution: the anti-glare lens.

This innovation led to the creation of sunglasses specifically designed to reduce the distraction for pilots caused by the intense blue and white hues of the sky.

When purchasing eyewear, it’s important to choose the right kind of lens. This will depend on your prescription and lifestyle, but it’s hard to make a choice without understanding the different glasses lens types and how they play into your needs. 

There are many factors involved when choosing lenses, but one of the most important ones is the lens index. Alongside this, materials and available lens coatings can also impact your decision.

What is lens index?

Lens index, also known as refractive index, is a measurement that indicates how efficiently the lens bends light as it passes through it. As the lens index value increases, the lens becomes thinner.

Which lens index is right for you will depend on the SPH, CYL, ADD and Prism values on your correct prescription. 

The CYL won’t always be present on the prescription as it indicates the power of your astigmatism correction. If you don’t have a CYL on your prescription, it means you don’t have astigmatism.

The SPH instead indicates the amount of lens power prescribed for (-) or (+), this is your SPH correction. The SPH value is present on all prescriptions except for those which only have astigmatism correction, which only have a CYL. 

These values will help you determine which lenses are right for you. Though lower-index lenses are more affordable, they are only suitable for lower power correction requirements and if chosen for high power prescriptions, they can be uncomfortable due to their thickness.

High-index lenses are instead more versatile. As they are thinner, they tend to be more comfortable, and they can cater to a wider range of prescriptions. This makes them the right choice for both high-prescriptions and people looking for a more aesthetically pleasing option.

That said, as the index impacts the depth of tint they may not be the best solution for certain kinds of prescription sunglasses.

Lens material

The available lens materials have different physical properties and features. To understand what the ideal choice is for your eyeglasses, it’s best to know what they are.

Plastic

Plastic eyeglass lenses are one of the most common types of lenses. Our plastic lenses are made in either CR-39 plastic or polycarbonate.

CR-39 plastic is the standard glasses lens material. It offers good vision correction for refractive errors and blocks out 80% of UV light. 

It’s also lighter than glass, though at the same thickness it has a lower refractive index than alternatives in other materials. This is why it’s best to avoid certain frame shapes and higher prescriptions. That said, they are still thinner than glass.

Polycarbonate lenses were introduced as an alternative to CR-39 plastic. They are thinner and more lightweight than other plastic alternatives, which makes them more impact resistant. That said, polycarbonate scratches easily so they require scratch-resistant coating for durability.

High-index materials

The MR series (MR7, MR8, MR10 and MR174) is a line of optical materials with high refractive index. This makes it possible to get thinner lenses with the same prescription strength as thicker lenses, making them good lenses for high prescriptions. 

MR8 has a refractive index of 1.6 and is the standard high index material. It offers minimal chromatic aberration in the visual periphery, alongside impact and thermal resistance. This makes it well suited to a wide range of purposes.

MR7 is at the forefront of modern lens technology. With a refractive index of 1.67, it is 15% thinner than the MR8 alternative. It also offers high tintability, making it ideal for sunglasses and fashion-oriented glasses.

MR10 is similar to MR7. Its 1.67 index makes it just as thin and light, though it has less tintatibility. That said, it offers excellent thermal resistance which is why it’s recommended for a wide range of working temperatures.

Last but not least, the MR174 is the ultra thin lens of the MR series. With its refractive index of 1.74, it’s recommended for those looking for extra thinnes. For example, they are recommended for the geometric glasses shapes, and with the memory metal used in rimless frames. 

MR174 is also a good choice for the eco-conscious as it’s made entirely of plant-derived materials.

Our essential lenses

1.5 lens index

Our 1.5 index lenses are recommended for prescriptions between SPH +/-2.75 and CYL +/-2.00. We offer them as part of our standard/value and comfort/standard packages.

These are standard affordable single-vision lenses. They’re made in CR-39 plastic and can come with scratch resistant and anti-reflective coatings, which makes them more durable and helps them reduce glare for better visual clarity. You can also get a series of add-ons, like zFORT® blue light blocking and Transitions®.

  • Material:  plastic (CR-39)

1.61 lens index

Our 1.61 index lenses are recommended for prescriptions between SPH+4.25 to -5.00 and CYL +/-3.00. As this lens is 25% thinner than our basic lens, it is more comfortable and easier to fit to frames.

They are part of our thin & light/comfort package and come with both scratch-resistant and anti-reflective coatings. They also have UV 400 protection.

  • Lens Index:  basic 1.61
  • Material:  high-index (MR8)
  • Coatings:  scratch resistant, anti-reflective, UV 400

Available add-ons: zFORT® blue light blocking, Transitions®, tints, polarizations, mirror finish

The gold/comfort package is our recommended essential option for reading, distance and varifocal lenses.

1.67 lens index

Our 1.67 index lenses are very thin, 40% more than our basic 1.5 lenses. We offer them as part of our ultra/premium package which is recommended for prescriptions between SPH+7.00 to -8.00 and CYL +/-4.00.

They are aspheric, which means they have a flatter curve to reduce central thickness. This makes them both more comfortable and easier to fit to frames. 

They also come with scratch resistant and anti-reflective coatings, alongside UV 400 protection. And that’s not all, they have a superhydrophobic coating that repels water to keep your lenses clear!

  • Lens Index:  thin 1.67
  • Shape:  aspheric
  • Material:  high index (MR7 & MR10)
  • Coatings:  scratch resistant, anti-reflective, UV 400, superhydrophobic

1.74 lens index

Our 1.74 index lenses are our thinnest lenses. They are 60% thinner than our basic 1.5 lenses and recommended for prescriptions between SPH+10.00 to -14.00 and CYL +/-6.00.

Just like our premium 1.67 lenses, they come with the same coating and are aspheric for maximum comfort. They are part of our deluxe/premium plus package.

Also known as myopia, nearsightedness is a common vision problem that causes objects in the distance to appear blurry.

Symptoms include squinting to see far away, frequent headaches, eye rubbing and eye strain when performing activities that need distance vision.

Risk factors can range from natural causes, such as age, genetics and diabetes, to lifestyle choices, such as excessive screen time and spending too much time indoors.

Commonly referred to as short-sightedness or nearsightedness, myopia is a common vision condition that causes blurry distance vision.

People with myopia can clearly see nearby objects like a book or a computer screen, but struggle with objects that are further away from them, like road signs or television screens .

Though in more severe cases it can cause significant visual impairment, light nearsightedness is extremely common and easy to treat.

The American Optometric Association estimates that it affects almost 30 percent of Americans and in most cases, it can be solved with simple vision correction. 

What causes myopia?

The eye is a natural lens, similar to a camera. It enables us to see by focusing light rays on the retina, located at the back of your eye.

If you have myopia, your eye’s anatomy causes light rays to refract (or bend) incorrectly, focusing light not on your retina, but in front of the retina.

Usually, the rays fall short of the retina because the eyeball is a little too long, your cornea is too rounded, or a combination of the two. This makes your distance vision blurry, much like when settings of a camera are wrong.

But just as you can adjust a camera lens to get a clearer image, corrective lenses can focus light precisely on your retina, giving you perfect vision.

Symptoms of myopia

Blurred vision when looking at far away objects sounds like an obvious sign, though when mild it can be mistaken for normal vision and go unnoticed.

That said, an eye doctor will be able to use an eye chart to make a myopia diagnosis even if you haven’t noticed any symptoms yet. 

Myopia symptoms may include:

  • Blurry vision when looking at distant objects.
  • The need to squint or partially close the eyelids to see clearly.
  • Headaches caused by eye strain and visual stress.
  • Difficulty seeing while driving a vehicle, especially in dim light.

Often detected during childhood, myopia is commonly diagnosed from the early school years through the teens.

When diagnosed in children, the accelerated eye growth during the teenage years often causes it to worsen, though there is usually little change between the ages of 20-40. 

A child with myopia may:

  • Persistently squint.
  • Need to sit closer to the television, movie screen or the front of the classroom.
  • Seem to be unaware of far away objects.
  • Blink excessively.
  • Rub their eyes frequently.

Risk factors for myopia

Though anyone can develop myopia, there are certain risk factors that make it more likely. These include genetics and family history, but also other things like lifestyle and environmental factors, general eye health and pre-existing conditions. 

Risk factors for nearsightedness can include:

  • Age. 
  • Diabetes or high blood pressure. 
  • Frequent visual stress. 
  • Family history.
  • Spending less time outdoors.
  • Too much screen time.

Myopia is even more prevalent in Asia. Myopia rates for some countries can go up to 80% of the population. 

Different types of myopia

Myopia can be divided into mild nearsightedness, moderate nearsightedness and severe nearsightedness.

Eye doctors measure the severity of the condition in dioptres, a unit of refractive power that essentially measures how effective a lens is at bending light. 

In practice, the dioptres on a prescription tell you how severe the refractive error caused by myopia is and how many dioptres are needed to correct nearsightedness.

High myopia

Severe nearsightedness (more than 6 dioptres of myopia) is also called high myopia. Since this generally implies a more severe deformity of the eye shape or cornea, it’s important to follow your eye doctor’s advice to prevent complications.

Low myopia

Light nearsightedness (generally less than 3 dioptres of myopia) is the informal term for low myopia. It’s instead referred to as mild myopia or moderate nearsightedness when there are 3 to 6 dioptres of myopia. 

Though this requires less correction than high myopia, it’s important to remember to stay on top of it to prevent further loss of visual acuity. If not treated correctly, low myopia can progress into high myopia.

Possible complications

In some cases, high myopia can transition into pathological myopia. Also known as degenerative myopia, this implies the presence of certain complications that can be more severe.

Complications seen in pathological myopia can include:

  • Cataracts. 
  • Glaucoma. 
  • Optic neuropathy. 
  • Neovascularization. 
  • Retinal detachment. 
  • Myopic macular degeneration (MMD).
  • Open angle glaucoma.

That said, it’s important to remember that the vast majority of cases of nearsightedness require nothing more than simple vision correction.

Nowadays, there are many treatment and prevention options available to reduce the risk of developing pathological myopia. 

Testing for myopia

An eye doctor can test for myopia using a standard eye exam. This generally includes the use of an eye chart to test visual acuity and the use of a lighted retinoscope to measure how well your eyes focus light. 

Since it’s more likely to develop at an early age, it’s also common for paediatricians to check a child’s eyes at routine check-ups. That said, when possible it’s best to go to an eye doctor for a first comprehensive eye exam before the age of one. 

Early diagnosis is very beneficial to myopia management and can prevent progressive myopia from becoming too severe.

Remember, you may not notice you have low myopia. This is why, regardless of whether you think you’re developing myopia or not, it’s important to go to your optician for regular vision screenings.

Treatment

Options to treat nearsightedness in children include glasses with corrective lenses and contact lenses. Adults (and in rare cases children) may also opt for refractive surgery. 

Eyeglasses

Eyeglasses are the most common myopia treatment option.

The dioptre on a prescription indicates how strong the corrective lenses need to be, and depending on the severity of the condition an eye doctor may suggest wearing glasses all day long or only when performing certain activities.

Generally, single vision lenses are enough to correct myopia, though in people over 40 or with multiple prescriptions an optician may recommend varifocal lenses. 

Contact lenses

An alternative to eyeglasses is to wear contact lenses instead. Much like eyeglasses, contact lenses for myopia improve distance vision by correcting the refractive error.

Eye surgery

There are many surgical options available to correct myopia.

Though they are generally only available for adults due to the eye growth that takes place in the childhood and teenage years, they are a good option for both people with mild and severe myopia.

An eye doctor will direct you to which refractive surgery best suits your needs based on the severity of the condition and the nature of the deformity causing it. Options include laser eye surgery and phakic intraocular lenses, amongst others.
