Prescription sunglasses combine prescription lenses with sun protection. Order them online in just 4 easy steps!

Are you constantly straining your eyes to see while wearing non-prescription sunglasses outside? If you wear prescription glasses every day, it’s time to invest in a pair of prescription sunglasses to wear outdoors. Prescription shades will give you the best of both worlds: clear vision and protected eyes.

Indeed, in addition to protecting your eyes from the sun’s UV rays, prescription sunglasses will help you see, reduce eye strain and help avoid squinting. Continue reading to learn more about what rx sunglasses are, their benefits, how to add your prescription online and how to choose the best pair.

People who need prescription lenses sometimes still wear non-prescription sunglasses. Doing so can result in eye strain, headache and frustration from being unable to see clearly in the sun. These irritating symptoms are far from ideal when combined with the sun, sea, sand and sunscreen.

With prescription lens sunglasses, you can sunbathe, hike and easily play outdoor sports. Sunglasses are available with prescriptions for nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. You can also get sunglasses with progressive lenses.

Are prescription sunglasses worth it?

Your everyday lifestyle in the sun will transform once you invest in prescription sunglasses. Here is why:

  • They provide clear and protected vision on sunny days
  • They ensure you are not straining your eyes outside to avoid future eye issues
  • No need to carry around two pairs of glasses wherever you go
  • More comfortable than wearing contact lenses and sunglasses

How to order prescription sunglasses online

We recommend booking an appointment with your eye care provider for an up-to-date prescription before ordering your prescription lens sunglasses. However, if you have a current prescription but it’s misplaced, try our Lens Scanner app to reveal it in minutes.

Unlike contact lenses, your prescription will not differ for your eyeglasses and sunglasses. Once you have your prescription, you must follow these steps at SmartBuyGlasses:

At the customisation stage, you can tailor the sunglasses lenses with options such as anti-reflective lenses that are UV400 protected. You can also choose popular mirrored prescription sunglasses or polarisation lenses for your sunglasses. For more information, see the section ‘how to choose your prescription sunglasses’ later in this article.

How much do prescription sunglasses cost?

Sunglasses with a prescription cost a bit more than non-prescription sunglasses since your specific prescription needs to be built into the lenses.

However, in-store prescription lens sunglasses are often more expensive than buying them online.

How to choose prescription sunglasses

Firstly, choose the frame model you like. Read our short guide for some tips to determine what frame shape will suit you. You can also use our revolutionary Virtual Try-On tool to wear your chosen frames digitally before you buy!

Sunglasses with prescription lenses can be made with various materials, including high-index lenses, polycarbonate lenses, CR-39 plastic lenses, trivex lenses and even glass lenses. When selecting prescription lenses for your sunnies, there are several types of lenses to consider.

DID YOU KNOW?
Prescription sunglasses are the perfect solution to combine clear vision and protected eyes. Shopping online for a pair it's easy and convenient, and you can customize them with different types of lenses.

Photochromic prescription lenses

A photochromic tint will give your lenses a transition effect – which means they will automatically adjust to changes in ambient light conditions. This means they darken in the sun and become clearer indoors, which is ideal if you do not want to carry multiple pairs of glasses.

Polarized prescription sunglasses

Polarised sunglasses greatly eliminate glare to improve visual comfort and reduce eye fatigue. This lens is ideal if you spend time near water, snow, driving and playing outdoor sports

Colour-matching Lenses

By choosing this option, our manufacturers will match your prescription lenses to the same colour as the original sunglasses’ lenses. These lenses will still offer you UV protection and ensure you look trendy!

Mirrored prescription sunglasses

Opting for mirrored prescription sunglasses is ideal for fashion-conscious wearers. The lenses have a mirrored coating that helps to reflect light away from your eyes more than any regular tinted sunglasses.

We recommend contacting your optician to ensure you have the correct and updated prescription before you start shopping. Plus, if you still have some questions about prescription sunglasses, you can talk with one of the certified online opticians at SmartBuyGlasses.

How Can I Make My Glasses Anti-Reflective?

Anti-reflective (AR) coatings are a simple upgrade that can make a big difference in your vision and comfort.
Glare on glasses

As we’re all aware, the main function of glasses is to allow us to enjoy a clear, sharp field of vision, and therefore live life in greater comfort.

However, if you wear glasses regularly, you’re probably familiar with the annoying reflections and glare from lenses.

Modern lens technology has found smart solutions to fix this, and anti-reflective coating is one of them. Here, we’ll explain how it works and why it might be the perfect upgrade for your eyeglasses.

What is glare and how does it affect your eyesight?

Do you ever feel discomfort when looking directly at sources of light through your glasses? This could be due to glare.

Glare is defined as a strong, dazzling light. Although it often comes directly from a light source, it can also happen when light is reflected off an object, such as glass, water and certain metals.

Due to the glare we experience from highly reflective surfaces, viewing these objects closer to a light source becomes difficult.

What are anti-reflective glasses?

There are several types of coatings you can add to your eyeglass lenses to improve your viewing experience. These include impact resistance, hydrophobic, UV and blue light protection and, of course, anti-reflective coatings.

Also known as anti-glare lenses, anti-reflective (AR) coatings reduce reflections on the outer surface of lenses by allowing more light to pass through them.

Have you ever been unable to see a person’s eyes due to the reflection on their glasses? These reflections are an aesthetic concern for some, especially in photos or video calls. AR coatings help eliminate these unwanted reflections, ensuring your eyes remain visible.

anti glare

Beyond aesthetics, AR coatings also improve visual clarity. By allowing more light to pass through instead of bouncing it off, the halos that form around bright lights are removed from view, improving visual acuity as a result.

This can reduce eye strain in various conditions while making everyday activities more comfortable, such as driving at night and using digital devices.

While some retailers use the term “anti-glare coating,” it’s important to note that the correct terminology is “anti-reflective coating.” If you’re looking for a lens technology that only reduces glare, polarised lenses are the best solution, although they are only available for sunglasses.

How does an anti-reflective coating work?

AR coatings are made of layers of metal oxides. Simply put, anti-reflective coating cancels out the light reflected on the surface of the lenses and allows more light to pass through them and reach your eyes.

The more light that reaches your eyes, the more clearly you can see. This is all achieved by a fairly complex scientific process called the optical interference model.

anti reflective coating

Basically, the layers of the anti-reflective coating work together to introduce “destructive” light waves, which, as their name suggests, destroy the reflection on the lenses.

Uncoated lenses allow about 92% of light to pass through them. Anti-reflective coating increases that number to 99%, giving the wearer greater visual acuity.

Caring for glasses with anti-reflective lenses

Contrary to what you may think, an anti-reflective coating can make your glasses easier to clean and care for. Most AR coatings give the lens surface a hydrophobic finish, which repels water and dirt, so the lenses don’t smudge so easily.

That said, you may have to clean them more frequently as dust is more visible on them. Like with any glasses, always use a microfibre cloth to clean instead of a t-shirt, tissue, or other materials that may cause tiny abrasions.

It’s also useful to wet the lenses beforehand to further protect them from the risk of friction-induced scratches.

Ask your dispensing optician to recommend which cleaning products can be safely used to clean your anti-reflective glasses. The harsh chemicals in some products can damage this type of coating.

Benefits of anti-reflective coatings

The most noticeable benefit of AR coatings is the improved appearance of the lenses. Without reflections, the wearer’s eyes are more visible, making conversation and eye contact in general easier.

For the wearer, the absence of reflections on their lenses is less distracting, especially in situations such as driving at night, working in a brightly lit environment, or in front of digital screens. As a result, your eyes are put under less strain.

AR lens coatings also improve visual acuity, meaning your vision will be sharper, thanks to the extra light getting through to your eyes.

Benefit

This coating is particularly useful on high-index lenses, as these can reflect up to 50% more light than other lenses. This makes an AR coating almost essential for high-index prescription lens wearers.

When it comes to sunglasses, the dark lens tint generally negates the need for an AR coating on the outside of the lenses. However, it can still be applied on the inside of the lenses for greater comfort when the sun is behind you.

DID YOU KNOW?

Every anti-reflective coating gives the lenses it’s applied to a very subtle tint. This tint is most often either green, brown, or yellow.

Anti-reflective vs polarised lenses

Both AR coatings and polarised lenses greatly reduce glare, but the way they do it and the situations they serve best may differ.

As you now know, AR coatings allow more light to pass through the lens, reducing distractions from glare, improving visual clarity and eye contact. They are helpful for everyday eyeglasses, and particularly beneficial for driving at night or digital device usage.

Polarised lenses, on the other hand, block horizontal light waves, which are responsible for creating glare from surfaces like water, road and snow, providing the wearer with sharper vision. Best used in outdoor activities, these lenses are typically heavily tinted, making them unsuitable for regular eyeglasses.

anti glare vs polarised

If you spend a lot of time outdoors and participate in activities such as driving, fishing and skiing, polarised glasses may be a valuable addition for you.  But if adding an extra coat of benefits to your regular prescription glasses is what you’re looking for, AR coating will be the best choice.

Either way, both options offer the valuable benefits of anti-glare, improving your visual comfort and clarity based on your lifestyle needs.

How can I make my glasses anti-reflective?

As is usually the case when it comes to eyewear choices, your own vision requirements and lifestyle will dictate what the best option for you is.

If, after reading this article, you believe anti-reflective lens coating is worth the investment, here’s how you can get your anti-glare glasses:

  1. Explore our wide range of eyewear and find your favourite pair. Feel free to experiment with our Virtual Try-On Tool to see what frames look like on you before you buy.
  2. When adding your new frames to the cart, click the “Choose Lenses” option.
  3. Choose the type of lens you need, such as single vision, varifocal or plano (non-prescription). Add your prescription details if you need lenses with corrective power.
  4. Select a “Lens Package” with anti-reflective coating. All our lens packages aside from our free 1.5 index lenses include this.
  5. Choose any additional add-ons and proceed to checkout.

And that’s, you’re anti-glare glasses will arrive in no time!

Given how much time we spend wearing our glasses, it's essential that they're comfortable in terms of both fit and vision.

Glasses are almost like an extension of our body, so finding the perfect and most comfortable fit can be a life changer.

There are many things to consider when choosing your first pair of glasses or even a brand-new model to freshen up your prescription or look.

This article is here to guide you in ensuring you get the most comfortable and perfect pair for your needs.

1. What type of eyeglasses do you need?

Before diving into the aesthetics, the first step is to ensure your eyeglasses serve their primary function – improving your vision. This starts with a current and accurate prescription for your prescription lenses.

Next, consider the type of lenses that your lifestyle and vision need. Options include:

  • Single-vision lenses for nearsightedness or farsightedness.
  • Varifocals for those requiring multiple focal points.
  • Reading glasses for those with presbyopia.
  • Prism lenses to correct vision disorders like double vision.
  • Plano lenses to change up your look without affecting your vision.
  • Prescription sunglasses to provide UV protection and correct your vision.

Additionally, lens add-ons and coatings such as anti-glare and blue light filtering can be crucial for comfort, especially if you spend significant time in front of digital screens.

6 different lens options

2. Determine your face shape

The second thing to consider is your face shape. As you can see in the image below, there are different types of face shapes.

Knowing yours is crucial to finding the frame shape that will fit your face perfectly without any discomfort.

Go to our dedicated page to find out your face shape and get frame recommendations.

5 different face shapes

In general, it’s important to match your face shape with the right frames to ensure the weight of the frame is distributed correctly on your face, without any pressure points on the temples, nose or cheekbones.

The goal is to find eyeglasses that feel as if they’re barely there!

3. Know your measurements

If you know your face measurements, you’re one step closer to finding the perfect pair! To be prepared, follow this measuring your face for glasses guide.

Key measurements to know include frame width, lens width, temple length and bridge width.

DID YOU KNOW?

There is no one-size-fits-all option when it comes to maximising the comfort of your glasses; they need to match your specific requirements.

4. The importance of the nose bridge

Your perfect pair should have the right nose bridge to fit your facial features and measurements. This refers to the horizontal distance between the two lenses.

The size and type of bridge play a role in how the weight is distributed over your nose, hence impacting how comfortable your eyeglasses are. Here are a few simple rules:

  • The frames should never feel too tight on the nose.
  • There can be a slight gap between the bridge of the glasses and your nose.
  • If the eyeglass bridge is too wide, the glasses will slide down.
  • If the bridge is too narrow, it’ll lead to a lot of pressure on the sinuses.

Additionally, if you have a low nose bridge, you can opt for Asian-fit glasses

These are designed with a shallower nose bridge and a wider front and are an excellent alternative for those who struggle with glasses slipping down their nose.

5. Consider your personality and lifestyle

Another key factor to consider is your lifestyle and personal style.

Eyeglasses that align with your lifestyle can significantly enhance wearability, prevent discomfort and even protect your eyes in various environments.

  • For an active lifestyle: If you’re constantly on the move, involved in sports or enjoy outdoor activities, look for eyeglasses that promise durability and flexibility. Materials like polycarbonate are not only impact-resistant but also lighter than traditional plastic, reducing the strain on your nose and ears throughout active use.

  • For the digital native: If you spend considerable time in front of computers or digital devices, consider lenses with blue light filtering capabilities

  • For the fashion-forward: If expressing your personal style through eyewear is your priority, you’ll find that comfort doesn’t have to be sacrificed for fashion. Look for frames that balance style with ergonomic features. For instance, lightweight materials such as acetate can offer both a chic look and a comfortable fit.

More tips for the most comfortable glasses fit

The examples listed above are just some of the many combinations of materials, lenses, models, add-ons and coatings available to create your personalised pair of glasses.

Some other tips for the most comfortable fit:

  • If the frames are too large, it will be very evident – they won’t even sit on your face and will slide down your nose. Conversely, if they’re too small, they might pinch the cheeks and even lead to headaches.

  • Wearing glasses with headphones can be quite uncomfortable. If earphones just don’t cut it and you’re a headphones addict, consider thin-frame glasses to optimise noise cancellation.

  • Familiarise yourself with DIY methods of adjusting eyeglasses that don’t fit perfectly so that you can save yourself a trip to the optician and keep feeling comfortable with your new eyeglasses.

  • Wearing new glasses requires a period of adjustment. During the initial days, it is normal to experience mild headaches and tiredness in the eyes.

The point is for your eyeglasses’ shape and size to be in harmony with your face and skin tone, bringing about an overall balanced look.

What are Bifocal Glasses?

Ask our dispensing opticians

Bifocal lenses have significant advantages, but there are other things to consider before deciding if a pair of bifocals is the best choice for you.
What are Bifocal Glasses

Bifocal glasses have come a long way since the 1700s when Benjamin Franklin created the first pair. He coined them “double spectacles,” as they contained two different types of lenses in one pair of glasses.

If you’re tired of constantly switching between glasses, bifocals might be the solution. And don’t worry, the lenses and style have significantly evolved since Ben Franklin’s pair.

What are bifocals?

Bifocals are unique multifocal lenses that allow you to have one pair of prescription glasses that can improve both near and far eyesight. If you look closely at bifocal lenses, you may notice a difference between the long-distance and close-range lenses, and that’s because they are two different prescriptions.

To others looking at you, the difference is almost undetectable. This lens is designed to work as both reading and prescription glasses, all in one frame.

How do bifocal lenses work?

The lens is divided in two, the larger part of the lens, located at the top, is for seeing long-distance. It can help you see far away, read street signs or watch television from across the room. The smaller part, located at the bottom of the lens, allows for improved close-up vision.

This part enables you to check your smartphone or read a book. Bifocal lenses may take some time to adjust, but they are easy to use. You use bifocals by moving your eyes depending on the distance you wish to see.

Generally, you look up and through the larger portion when looking farther away, and you look down through the smaller segment when focusing on objects nearer to your eyes.

Bifocals are an excellent option for people with presbyopia, an age-related loss of the eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects. Bifocals can also be worn with contact lenses, making them a versatile option for many.

DID YOU KNOW?

Benjamin Franklin invented bifocals in 1779. He had developed both shortsightedness and nearsightedness over the years, and so he came up with this innovative solution.

Bifocal vs progressive lenses

Both bifocal and progressive lenses allow you to transition from near to far prescriptions all in one lens. Both can also be used as a solution for presbyopia and provide comfortable vision for people with multiple prescriptions. While similar, there are a few distinct differences between the two.

Bifocal lenses

  1. Two vision segments (one for near and one for distance vision)
  2. Has a distinct line separating the segments
  3. May cause difficulty reading a computer screen

Progressive lenses

  1. Progression between all distances (near, intermediate, and far vision)
  2. No distinction between distance powers in the lens (no line)
  3. Middle segment for better computer vision

While many immediately choose a progressive lens because of the seamless transition, some find the strong distinction between prescriptions in a bifocal lens more comfortable.

It is important to consider your lifestyle and preference when choosing your lenses. If you’re curious or want more information, visit our Optical Center and speak with one of our opticians.

Advantages and disadvantages of bifocal lenses

As is the case with most things, bifocal lenses have advantages and disadvantages. It is important to remember that everyone has different needs when it comes to glasses. Speaking with an optician and finding the right lenses is just as important as how they look.

Advantages

  1. One pair of glasses for near and far vision
  2. Typically more affordable than progressive lenses
  3. May be easier to adjust to than progressive lenses

Disadvantages

  1. Distinct separation lines may be distracting or “unfashionable”
  2. Visual distortion is more likely than wearing two separate pairs of glasses
  3. No area for intermediate vision
  4. They may take more time to adjust to than single vision glasses

Can you have LASIK if you wear bifocals?

LASIK is an eye surgery that uses a laser to reshape the cornea. The cornea is the clear tissue that covers the eye and helps focus light. LASIK can treat vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

As we’ve discussed, bifocal wearers need glasses for both near and far vision correction. So is LASIK an alternative to regularly wearing bifocals?

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, people who regularly wear bifocals can undergo a particular form of LASIK called monovision LASIK. Monovision LASIK is when one eye is treated for distance vision and the other for close-up vision.

Another option for bifocal wearers is full distance LASIK, focusing on correcting both eyes for distance. People who choose this form of LASIK will typically continue to wear reading glasses for close-range tasks and computer work.

LASIK may not be a solution for everyone, and speaking with your eye doctor about the possibility, procedure, results, and possible complications is imperative.

Bifocal lenses

Having progressed since Benjamin Franklin first wore them, bifocals are different from the same old lenses. Bifocals are a great option for people who are sick of switching between glasses. With the ability to wear one pair and see both near and far clearly and accurately, bifocals are an easy and economical solution.

Discover the different types of blue light glasses and how to test their efficacy at-home.

In today’s world, people stare at digital screens every day, which can cause long-term damage to our eyes.

With hundreds of brands offering blue light blocking glasses, many people aren’t aware that their regular glasses may also have a blue light filter. How can we determine if they effectively block harmful blue light?

Thankfully, you don’t need to go to your local optometrist to find this out. Here we’ve gathered five different ways you can perform a blue light filter test from the comfort of your home.

What is blue light?

Before discussing the various at-home blue light tests, we need to learn what exactly blue light is.

Blue light is a type of light with a short wavelength and high energy that is emitted by digital screens, LED lights and the sun.

Some blue light is natural and necessary for our well-being, but when blue light rays reach a wavelength between 415-455nm, they can hit the retina and have a detrimental effect on vision.

In this case, wearing blue light glasses can be an effective way to counteract the effect of this short-wavelength light, and protect your eyes in the long term.

Different types of blue light-blocking lenses

At first sight blue light glasses can be distinguished by their lens colour. Understanding the differences between these lenses can help you choose the right ones for your needs.

Clear lenses

The most common type of blue light glasses – also known as blue light computer glasses – contain clear lenses.

These are especially useful when using your phone or laptop or while watching TV. They are perfect for daily use because they significantly relieve digital eye strain and improve sleep quality.

Their subtle coating filters out 25-30% of all blue light while maintaining the natural colour of objects.

Yellow lenses

Yellow lenses are recommended for nighttime driving because of their ability to provide better contrast.

They block 65-70% of all blue light and reduce glare from artificial light sources such as traffic lights and LED car headlights.

Orange & red lenses

Orange and red lenses offer the highest level of blue light protection. They filter out 99.5–99.9% of all blue light and can help improve sleep quality by minimising the disruption of the sleep hormone melatonin.

Using these glasses in the evening or before bedtime can reduce eye strain and fatigue, especially during prolonged periods of screen time.

In comparison with yellow lenses, blue light glasses with orange and red lenses are not suitable for nighttime driving.

They can also cause colour distortion making objects appear slightly different in hue. This may not be ideal for tasks that require colour accuracy, such as graphic design or photo editing.

DID YOU KNOW?

Not all coloured lenses effectively filter blue light; it’s the science behind the lens tint and coating that determines their efficacy in blocking harmful wavelengths.

Five ways to test blue light glasses

Testing blue light glasses doesn’t have to be complicated.

With a few simple methods, you can ensure that your glasses effectively block blue light and provide the protection you need without the need of visiting the local optician.

1. Reflection test

This is a good initial test to determine your glasses’ authenticity. Hold your blue light glasses up to a light source and observe the reflection.

If you spot a blue reflection on the lens surface, it indicates that they are effectively blocking blue light, though it doesn’t specify their level of blue light filtration.

2. Pigment test

Hold your glasses up to a screen emitting white light, such as a computer screen with a white background. If the screen appears slightly yellow, it means that the glasses filter blue light.

3. RGB colour chart test

Use a digital device to display an RGB colour chart. Put on your blue light glasses and observe the colours. If the blue light is effectively blocked, the blue section “B” should appear slightly darker or almost black and the green circle “G” should be a bit dimmed.

The image on the left represents a regular RGB colour chart, while the image on the right has been modified to simulate the results when using blue light lenses.

If you have true blue light filtering eyewear, both images will appear almost identical through your glasses.

4. Black and blue circle test

Similar to the previous test, put on your blue light glasses and look at the black and blue circles. If the circles appear less bright and a dark grey colour, your glasses are working as they should.

5. Spectrophotometer test

While the other methods are a great way to test your blue light blocking lenses and can be done at home, using a spectrophotometer is the best way to accurately and precisely measure how much blue light is being filtered.

The spectrophotometer test can be done in specialised labs or optical stores. The device will generate a spectrum report indicating the percentage of blue and green light blocked by your glasses, allowing you to assess their effectiveness.

spectrophotometer test spectrum report

Test not to use: blue light pen test

While there are many effective at-home tests, we advise you not to use a blue light pen to test your glasses.

The blue light test pen often accompanies blue light glasses imported from China and other local manufacturers.

This test kit typically includes a blue light pen and a small white card. The instructions claim that the pen emits blue light, and when shone on the card, it supposedly appears blue.

However, this test is fake because these pens emit violet light, not blue. Lab-grade spectrometers have confirmed that the wavelength of this light falls between 380-400nm, well within the violet light spectrum, while blue light ranges from 400nm to 500nm.

Glasses that pass the pen test filter violet light but do not block the harmful blue light emitted by LED screens.

Final thoughts

There are many blue light blocking glasses out there and before relying on them, we need to find out if they are really serving their purpose.

By performing these simple tests, you can ensure that your blue light glasses are providing the protection you need to reduce eye strain and improve your overall eye health.

Presbyopia is a common condition that causes blurred close-range vision. Learn what it is, what causes it and how to treat it.
woman reading book wearing glasses

If you’re thinking that your vision just isn’t what it used to be, you’re probably right. As you age, you may find that you’re struggling with things you’ve never had issues with like reading fine print.

This is normal, and completely expected due to something called presbyopia.

Presbyopia is a very common eye condition. In fact, everyone above the age of 45 is expected to experience it as it consists in an age-related loss of near vision that can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses or surgical options.

What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is a vision condition that causes blurred close-range vision. This is because as you grow older, your lens in your eyes lose their natural ability to focus on nearby objects.

As this worsens and the eye struggles more and more with near vision, the presbyopia will make it harder for you to see clearly when performing certain activities such as reading, writing or looking at a computer screen.

reading glasses on book

Presbyopia symptoms

As you age, you may notice both a loss in visual acuity (clarity) when looking at objects at close range, and blurred vision when trying to read fine print.

This can be a good indicator of presbyopia, though first symptoms are not always immediately noticeable.

Presbyopia symptoms include:

  • Squinting, especially when looking at close-range objects.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Difficulties reading small print.
  • Headache and eye strain after reading.
  • Reduced focusing ability, leading to the need to hold reading material by holding at arm’s length.
  • Needing brighter conditions to read or work in.
  • Eye fatigue.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should ask your eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam. That said, it’s best to get an eye screening around age 40, regardless of if you have symptoms.

This is because presbyopia tends to manifest around that age, with anyone above age 40 being at risk. Given the age-related nature of the condition, regular eye examinations can help stay on top of it by identifying vision change and any signs of sight impairment early on.

Symptoms similar to those of presbyopia can also occur in young people, though they are more often caused by eye fatigue from digital screens. That said, there’s no way of excluding vision impairments without a screening.

That’s why it’s best to keep an eye out for these symptoms and consult your optician if you notice any changes in your eye health whatsoever, regardless of age.

DID YOU KNOW?

Presbyopia has been around for ages! The name comes from Modern Latin and finds its roots in the ancient Greek terms presbus (old man) and ōps (eye).

What causes presbyopia?

Your eye uses a natural crystalline lens to focus light on your cornea, enabling you to see. This is similar to how cameras use a lens to focus light on the film and capture an image.

Just as the camera lens changes size when you zoom in and out of the picture, your eye’s lens is also somewhat flexible. The muscles surrounding it contract and relax as you focus, allowing it to change shape and serve as your eye’s autofocus system.

infographic on how presbyopia eye anatomy works

Though this mechanism tends to work very well when you’re young, your lens gets thicker as you age. This makes it much less flexible, which in turn causes the autofocus system to stop working when looking at close range items.

Presbyopia is the medical term for an age-related decrease in near vision as a result of lens rigidity.

Unlike other vision conditions like myopia and astigmatism, it isn’t born of a defect in the eye’s anatomy but is instead an unavoidable consequence of getting older.

Presbyopia treatment

icons depicting the treatments for presbyopia

Researchers aren’t sure why the eye loses flexibility as we age, but it happens to everyone. Though it may be frustrating, it’s nothing more than an unfortunate side effect of aging that can be easily corrected through treatment options.

Common treatments include glasses, contact lenses, medication and refractive surgery, giving you plenty of options to manage your presbyopia.

Glasses for presbyopia

Eyeglasses are the most common treatment options for presbyopia. As your eye’s natural lens loses flexibility, glasses can correct this by providing external support that allows your eyes to focus on near distances.

Reading glasses are often the best option if presbyopia is the only vision condition present. These help eyes focus when performing close range tasks, like reading a book or computer screen.

man reading book wearing glasses

Instead, varifocal addition lenses (VALs) are used when treating presbyopia in people with multiple vision conditions.

Thanks to the different vision areas on the lenses, they can be fit with more than one prescription. This allows you to correct both near vision, intermediate vision and distance vision with a single pair of glasses.

Contact lenses for presbyopia

Contact lenses are an alternative to glasses for treating presbyopia symptoms. These can be either monovision, bifocal or multifocal contact lenses.

Just as was the case with glasses, bifocal and multifocal contact lenses are fit with multiple prescriptions and cater to both near and distance vision correction.

Monovision contact lenses are instead lenses fit for distance vision in one lens, and near vision in the other. You can also get modified monovision contact lenses where one eye uses a multifocal contact lens and the other one uses a distance vision lens.

They are an effective solution, though they can take some time to get used to as they require switching between one eye and the other to see different distances.

Whether it’s best to wear glasses or contact lenses depends on your individual lifestyle and needs. An optician can help you understand what’s best for you.

Medication for presbyopia

Though traditionally there was no medication available for presbyopia, the FDA has recently approved the use of pilocarpine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution as a viable treatment option.

This consists of prescription eye drops that reduce the size of your pupils, helping your eyes focus on closer objects. They are effective for up to six hours and need to be used on a daily basis.

Surgery for presbyopia

Corrective surgery is also an option for presbyopia symptoms.

Monovision LASIK surgery is a form of surgical correction used to create an effect similar to monovision contact lenses. This is achieved by correcting one eye for near vision and the other eye for distance vision.

Then there’s PresbyLASIK, a new form of corrective laser surgery developed specifically for presbyopia that is now undergoing clinical trials in the U.S.

This procedure uses a special laser (called an excimer laser) to help regain vision at multiple distances. It does this by creating a multifocal ablation pattern directly on the eye’s clear front surface.

man reading book wearing glasses

Alongside this, other experimental treatments such as corneal inlays are being developed and tested. One promising study focuses on injecting an elastic gel into the structure in the eye that contains the natural lens (called the capsular bag). This is a more permanent treatment that could potentially offer a significant improvement in visual function.

In theory, the gel could replace the natural lens and serve as a new, more elastic one. In addition, some people undergoing cataract surgery may be able to achieve clear vision across all ranges by choosing presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens.
